Experience

With many years experience, first with ICI in the UK, then with Flamemag International in Australia and more recently as an independent consultant and University researcher, Professor Rothon is a recognised expert in the field of particulate fillers and their associated surface treatments. He has many publications and patents and has developed several commercial products.

He is the editor and main contributor to the textbook, Particulate Filled Polymer Composites, and has authored several chapters in other books; including a chapter on Functional Polymers and other Filler Surface Modifiers in Functional Fillers for Plastics Edited by Marino Xanthos.

He was a founder member of the successful Eurofillers conferences and is currently a member of the steering committee. He was a keynote speaker at Eurofillers 2005, 2007, 2009 and in 2011. Also chairman of Eurofillers 97 and of Several High Performance Fillers Conferences, both in Europe and the United States.

Particular Technical Achievements

Development and introduction to market of new forms of precipitated calcium carbonate fillers. Including a maleinised polybutadiene coated version (ICI).

Development and introduction to market of new coupling agents derived from maleinised polybutadiene for particulate fillers (ICI).

Development of very highly filled composites using magnetic fillers (ICI).

Development of white, conducting, filler for use in nylon fibres (ICI).

Development of new process for magnesium hydroxide fire retardant fillers (FLAMEMAG).

Development of new filler for PMMA solid surface products (ROTHON CONSULTANTS for client and now being commercialised).

Development of new fillers based on Diatomaceous Earth and Perlite. (ROTHON CONSULTANTS for client and now being commercialised).

Development of new coupling agent technology (ROTHON CONSULTANTS for client and now being commercialised).

Development of new filled products based on polyvinylbutyral recovered from end of life windscreens (ECOfillers).

Development of a process for making aqueous emulsions from post-consumer polyvinylbutyral from safety glass. (ECOfillers and now being used commercially by licensees in the US and Europe).
